Strategies to optimize donor safety with smaller grafts for adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation.
Authors: Campos BD, Botha JF Abstract PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe our current understanding of adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation (AA-LDLT) in terms of graft size. RECENT FINDINGS: Improved outcomes of small liver graft with the use of portal vein pressure (PVP) modulation

Quantification of skin penetration of antioxidants of varying lipophilicity
The objective of this study was to deliver antioxidants topically and quantify the amount permeated in the stratum corneum and underlying skin. Polyphenols (catechin, resveratrol and curcumin) and vitamin (retinol) with various lipophilic properties were delivered via porcine ear skin, using propylene glycol as a vehicle

Effects of cytochrome P450 (CYP)2C19 polymorphisms on pharmacokinetics of phenobarbital in neonates and infants with seizures
Conclusions PB PK parameters of neonates and infants with seizures were not significantly different among the groups with different CYP2C19 genotypes. The addition of CYP2C19 genotyping to PK models did not improve the dosing strategies in neonates and infants. (Source: Archives of Disease in Childhood)
Prehospital treatment for status epilepticus
In a trial reported in 2001 intravenous lorazepam was better than intravenous diazepam or placebo when given by paramedics to treat status epilepticus. Intravenous administration may be difficult in this situation, however, and intramuscular midazolam has become popular, although data to support this treatment are sparse. Now a multicentre US study (Robert Silbergleit and colleagues

Bioelectromagnetic forward problem: isolated source approach revis(it)ed.
Authors: Stenroos M, Sarvas J Abstract Electro- and magnetoencephalography (EEG and MEG) are non-invasive modalities for studying the electrical activity of the brain by measuring voltages on the scalp and magnetic fields outside the head. In the forward problem of EEG and MEG, the relationship between the neural sources and resulting signals is characterized using electromagnetic field theory. This forward problem is commonly solved with the boundary-element method (BEM).

Transfection property of a new cholesterol-based cationic lipid containing tri-2-hydroxyethylamine as gene delivery vehicle.
Authors: Kim BK, Doh KO, Hwang GB, Seu YB Abstract A novel cholesterol-based cationic lipid containing a tri-2- hydroxyethylamine head group and ether linker (Chol- THEA) was synthesized and examined as a potent gene delivery vehicle. In the preparation of cationic liposome, the addition of DOPE as helper lipid significantly increased the transfection efficiency. To find the optimum transfection efficiency, we screened various weight ratios of DOPE and liposome/DNA (N/P).

Integrated Management of Foot Rot of Lentil Using Biocontrol Agents under Field Condition.
Authors: Hannan MA, Hasan MM, Hossain I, Rahman SM, Ismail AM, Oh DH Abstract The efficacy of cowdung, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA)-biofertilizer, and Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU)-biofungicide, alone or in combination, was evaluated for controlling foot rot disease of lentil. The results exhibited that BINA-biofertilizer and BAUbiofungicide (peat soil-based Rhizobium leguminosarum and black gram bran-based Trichoderma harzianum) are compatible and have combined effects in controlling the pathogenic fungi Fusarium oxysporum and Sclerotium rolfsii, which cause the root rot of lentil. Cowdung mixing with soil (at 5 t/ha) during final land preparation and seed coating with BINA-biofertilizer and BAU-biofungicide (at 2.5% of seed weight) before sowing r…

A Comparative Study of Graph-Based, Eikonal, and Monodomain Simulations for the Estimation of Cardiac Activation Times
In this study, we present a graph-based method, which relies on point-to-point path finding to estimate activation times for single points in cardiac tissue with minimal computational costs.

Automatic Motion and Noise Artifact Detection in Holter ECG Data Using Empirical Mode Decomposition and Statistical Approaches
We present a real-time method for the detection of motion and noise (MN) artifacts, which frequently interferes with accurate rhythm assessment when ECG signals are collected from Holter monitors. Our MN artifact detection approach involves two stages. The first stage involves the use of the first-order intrinsic mode function (F-IMF) from the empirical mode decomposition to isolate the artifacts’ dynamics as they are largely concentrated in the higher frequencies

Targeted Minimum Loss Based Estimator that Outperforms a given Estimator
Targeted minimum loss based estimation (TMLE) provides a template for the construction of semiparametric locally efficient double robust substitution estimators of the target parameter of the data generating distribution in a semiparametric censored data or causal inference model (van der Laan and Rubin (2006), van der Laan (2008), van der Laan and Rose (2011)).
